Health in focus: Susan's story
Susan, who has Type 2 diabetes, and her husband endured five unsuccessful IVF attempts before conceiving twins; her care team recognized that poor blood-sugar control during pregnancy could be fatal for the unborn babies ("a delay can literally be the difference between life and death"). Optum diabetes nurse specialist Cathy partnered with Susan's physician to implement insulin-pump therapy and continuous monitoring, using OptumIQ's data-analytics dashboard so Susan's doctor could get consolidated blood-sugar logs, graphs and medication recommendations the day after ordering through the EMR. Susan maintained controlled blood sugar throughout pregnancy and delivered healthy twins without complications; her physician credited the partnership with enabling the best possible care, and Susan called the delivery "the very best feeling in the world."
