From VINs to Value: How Daimler Truck Is Building the Future of AI-Driven Manufacturing

When Edgar Gallo joined Daimler Truck North America as Chief Data Officer, the company didn't clearly know 'where is our data? What's in it? Who's using it?' -- and realized data governance alone wasn't enough to support AI-driven innovation. DTNA partnered with Alation starting in 2019 for GDPR/CCPA-compliant governance, then shifted toward an 'activation-focused' approach, building supply-chain AI agents with Numbers Station -- 'vertical' agents that reason like supply-chain planners and 'horizontal' agents that execute tasks -- powered by a metadata infrastructure. This let employees move from manually digging through data to strategic vendor partnership and resolution oversight, enabled 'bullwhip effect' detection to head off supply disruptions, and supports a semantic layer so users can 'converse with data' instead of managing tables and joins. The page's key line: 'No metadata, no AI. Large language models may grab headlines, but without high-quality, well-documented data, they're little more than noise.'

Alation is a data-catalog and data-intelligence platform that tells a pharma team what data actually exists, who owns it, and whether it is trustworthy enough to support an AI use case.

This sits in the Design & Stress-Test stage of the AI use-case lifecycle: Named examples from the tools pharma teams use to scope, prototype and benchmark an AI use case before committing to build it — data-catalog, sandbox and evaluation platforms.
