HealthVerity Real-World Data Supports CDC Study on HIV PrEP Surveillance

CDC researchers used HealthVerity Marketplace prescription, lab, and insurance data to build the largest real-world US cohort of 983 individuals prescribed long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) PrEP between January 2022 and June 2023 (nearly 79% Medicaid beneficiaries, over two-thirds Black or Hispanic), evaluating whether CDC-recommended dual antigen/antibody (Ag/Ab) plus RNA testing catches infections earlier. The study found no cases where RNA testing identified HIV earlier than Ag/Ab testing alone; positivity was 0.6% for both tests at initiation, and during follow-up Ag/Ab found 0.3% positive versus 0.1% for RNA, with RNA showing a 0.09% false-positive rate. HealthVerity's Tracy Hammonds noted real-world data "is still being viewed conservatively in some agency circles."
